Hawk with chips

Earth’s Sweet Pleasures Organic Fudge

An interview with Hawk, who along with his wife, Reonne, lovingly make Earth’s Sweet Pleasures Organic Fudge.

(Reprinted with permission from It’s Only Natural Gifts)

Your organic fudge is wonderful. What is the inspiration for this treat?  Since I’ve been making fudge for over 40 years, I wanted to make the finest, tastiest fudge I could with the best organic ingredients available. For example, I could use a standard organic chocolate. But I use the finest, fair-trade organic chocolate available, which is much more expensive for us. Gourmet Chocolate lovers definitely notice the difference.

What makes your fudge different from others and why are organic ingredients important to the taste of the product? Our fudge is different because of my unique, time-tested recipe and the way it is mixed, cooked, cooled and cut.  Organic means that there are NO chemicals, additives, preservatives, pesticides, etc. It’s all natural AND made the old-fashioned way.  We also use much less sugar than conventional fudge so the dark chocolate flavor comes through.  We found natural, organic vegetable oils make the consistency rich and creamy without the saturated fat.  Our fudge is actually healthier than most conventional chocolate bars.

Tell us a bit about where you make the fudge and who is involved in your business.  We are located in Northern California in the Sierra Nevada foothills in the historical gold-mining town of Nevada City (population 2,800), about half way between Sacramento and Reno.  We are a small, family-owned and operated business.  At any particular time, we may have children and grandchildren helping us, depending on the demand.  We hope to transition from a Mom and Pop company to a much larger, thriving company as we continue to expand and grow.

What other culinary delights do you enjoy and like to make for yourselves?  One of our family’s favorites is when I make sushi at home, including a vegetarian version for our 16 year-old daughter.  My wife, Reonne, prefers a large green salad any day of the week. But, I’m still a meat eater (organic only, of course), and one of my favorites is barbequed buffalo (organic only, of course), and one of my favorites is barbequed buffalo burgers with my own special home made barbeque sauce. I might market that too someday. For dessert, Rich Rainforest Dark fudge with a glass of red wine is heavenly.

What hobbies, work, interests, recreational activities do you have?  With the early stages of building our business, it’s more like work-sleep-work. But we also realize how important balance is, so we are taking more hikes on the trails and dips in the scenic Yuba River.

Making a high quality and yummy sweet is a heartfelt business. Are there other ways in which you live your life that make this world a better place?  My wife and I are both holistic healing practitioners. We have had a private practice for almost ten years where we provide mind/body/spirit healing for people.   We teach people healing techniques in workshops.  We live in an area of the country where most people are very conscious about their “environmental footprint.”  We live as sustainably as we possibly can.

Is there anything else you’d like to tell us about yourselves and your organic fudge? We started this company because we feel chocolate lovers deserve the very best and we want to spread the message that organic ingredients always make food taste better, as well as support the planet both environmentally and socially.  A portion of our proceeds go to select environmental and humanitarian organizations to further this goal.  Satisfied customers say our fudge is the best they’ve ever tasted. In love and gratitude we say thank you!
